“kâ mîķawiya”
(A gift which we are given)
by Kristi Bridgeman
There is a message of gratitude in this piece, in the form of a red ribbon. We wrap medicine bundles and gifts for knowledge carriers in red, as a way to show honour. Encircling the endemic flowers, plants, birds and insects, the red ribbon acknowledges them as “kâ mîķawiya,” a gift which we are given. The gifts are the scent of mock orange, the taste of berries, the music in birdsong, and the dance of rare butterflies along our path. The hummingbird is included as a symbol of perseverance in caring for our planet. Mirrored design and a black background are Métis design elements created by building layers of egg tempera into three dimensional ‘beads’—like the glass beadwork designs of my Métis ancestors. Medium: Egg tempera, Beam watercolour, ink on paper
This original won the Award of Excellence at the Sooke Fine Arts Show.
*ART CARDS: 6"x6" greeting card. Includes design story, artist bio, and envelope. If matted as a small print, off-white non-yellowing mat is added to the print, perfect for framing. Printed locally, 100% recycled FSC-certified paper.
*PRINTS: The image itself is 12"x12" and the paper extends to 13"x13". If matted, off-white non-yellowing mat is added to the print, perfect for framing. Includes design story and artist bio. Printed locally, 100% recycled FSC-certified paper.
*PRINT ON CANVAS: Large canvas, 24"x24". The print is high quality giclée on exhibition style (deep) canvas. Comes ready to hang.
Shipping: Via Canada Post. Allow two or more weeks for delivery for within Canada, longer for international. Prices calculated on check-out.
