Redwing Blackbird in the North

The Redwing Blackbird uses the Red Osier Dogwood thicket for food, shelter and camouflage. Inspired by the Beatles' song 'Blackbird', this work celebrates Metis design through egg tempera ‘beads’. It highlights resilience and beauty in both the endemic bird species and Canada’s indigenous heritage, creating a narrative that connects nature's colours with historical layers. The mirrored design and a black background are Métis design elements created by building layers of egg tempera into three dimensional ‘beads’--like the glass beadwork designs of my Métis ancestors.
