 AWARD OF EXCELLENCE
"kâ mîķawiya" (A gift we are given)
Sooke Fine Arts 2024

There is a message of gratitude in this piece, in the form of a red ribbon. We wrap medicine bundles and gifts for knowledge carriers in red, as a way to show honour. Encircling the endemic flowers, plants, birds and insects- the red ribbon acknowledges them as “kâ mîķawiya”, a gift which we are given. Gifts such as the scent of mock orange, the taste of berries, the music in birdsong, and the dance of rare butterflies along our path. The hummingbird is included as a symbol of perseverance in caring for our planet. Mirrored design and a black background are Metis design elements created by building layers of egg tempera into three dimensional 'beads' - like the glass beadwork designs of my Metis ancestors.

'Wahkohtowin'
By Lisa Shepherd and Kristi Bridgeman
Jasper Alberta

Parks Canada link for image description:
PARKS CANADA LINK

Cousin Lisa Shepherd and I were commissioned by Parks Canada to create an artwork for Jasper National Park as part of a larger art installation that acknowledges the people who were on the land before forced removal in 1907. The exhibition was set to open September 7th but the Jasper wildfires have delayed the official opening. However, Parks Canada has gone live with images and artists statements for our piece, Wahkohtowin, on their website now, so we can share the link (in bio)
On July 22, 2024, we watched social media and grieved as the wildfires burned much of the Palisades Education Centre, the land which once was our family’s homestead. By July 24, the fire encroached on the township. Many people that we know and care about who resided in Jasper lost their homes. A young firefighter lost his life. Plants and animals perished. The land has changed.

Lisa and I are grateful to the people of the Jasper Indigenous Forum who gathered together with us for conversation around plants, animals, natural elements and stories important to their communities to help inform this piece. Thank you also to Vivian McDonald for tanning the moosehide to hold the beadwork.

Lisa and I feel the time is right to learn about Wahkohtowin, and our responsibility to the land.

Indigenous People’s Experience at Fort Edmonton Park-  amiskwacîwâskahikan
Picture

During such a difficult time and with so many people grieving across the land, this space is significant to give voice and visibility to FNMI people. Many artists and artisans work is displayed there, and true stories are told in the voice of the people. This space will educate and inform, with tens of thousands of visitors and school groups going through it each year.

The Metis cabin also features Lisa and Kristi's  collaborative works. Their families, (the Campions, Chalifouxs, Donalds, L’Hirondelles, Norris, Gladues and Dumonts) were there on the land along with so many other Métis families at the very beginning of the formation of the province.

Breathe: Creating resilience through traditional art

Through hardship, we turn to art; through challenge, we turn to tradition. Discover resilience and humanity amid a 21st-century pandemic in this exhibition of hand-crafted masks by artists from around the world.
The masks of Breathe share their makers’ unique stories of fear, courage, sadness, hope, love, and healing that unite us all. Each mask was crafted through diverse mediums including beadwork, embroidery, birch bark etching, quill work, quilting, rug hooking, metalwork, and glass fusion.
My tiny (newborn sized) embroidered mask contribution is included in the exhibit.

Detail, Meadow Camas, Garry Oak Ecosystem, Saanich Field Guide,
New 2021 Saanich, BC, Saanich Parks Field Guide
Saanich Parks released a beautiful new field guide to inspire a passion for nature discoveries in parks close to home. This illustrated field guide highlights some of the plants and animals found in Saanich parks and the different types of ecosystems where they live. It is a visual learning tool aimed at youth, but the intent is to encourage learning and enjoyment for all park visitors.
“We hope our new guide will enhance the experience of our park visitors and encourage them to be curious about their natural surroundings,” said Manager Community Development and Business Systems Nathalie Dechaine. “The guide is part of our Natural Intelligence initiative that aims to improve citizens’ knowledge about our natural world and how we connect with it. In deepening that connection with nature, we tend to be happier, healthier and motivated to protect it. ”
The field guide was developed to have the look and feel of an artist’s nature notes highlighting some of the plants and animals that live in our local ecosystems. Illustrated to capture the spirit and beauty of the unique nature that exists around us. Saanich Parks will develop resources for families and educators to use with the field guide so they can broaden their learning while experiencing these lovely places. Saanich parks provide vital habitat for plants and animals. Please help us protect these special places by treading carefully, taking only memories and leaving nothing but footprints.
The field guide is available at  Saanich-Plants-Animals-Field-Guide.pdf

Over a dozen artists delve into the multiple significances held by cut flowers, ornamental
gardens and wild plants to reveal how flowers act as surrogates for all kinds of ideas. Drawing on the personal, the political and the cultural meanings of flowers, the artworks in the exhibition go beyond notions of beauty to take an unexpected look at this familiar floral subject matter.
