My tiny contribution to this beautiful exhibit is the miniature 'Newborn and Child' mask, honouring a childs experience during the early days of COVID. For many children during the pandemic, life took a surreal shift. A childs experience became homeschool at the kitchen table, yellow tape around the playgrounds, faces in masks and measuring distances between each other. We did this for our elders and those who couldn't fight off the virus.
During 2020 our family welcomed the arrival of a new baby. I had looked forward to attending this birth, as I have others in the family. Unfortunalty during COVID, hospitals limit visitors, so despite my experience as birth coach and a strong desire to be there with my daughter, I was unable to attend. I truly sympathized with how awful it must have been for those millions of people who were unable to be with their loved ones in hospital.
The fabric of this piece has been given an antique tea over dye to simulate a mask worn during the 1918 Spanish Influenza. The piece includes pastel medicine wheel colours and yellow mouse tracks, for the children. Decorated with Cree Metis designs in cotton crewel-work embroidery thread and glass beads.Medium: Cotton muslin, baby receiving blanket fabric lining, glass beads, cotton embroidery thread, cotton yarn pom poms, and filled with a small amount of sweetgrass, for gentle dreams.

Indigenous People’s Experience at Fort Edmonton Park- amiskwacîwâskahikan
During such a difficult time and with so many people grieving across the land, this space is significant to give voice and visibility to FNMI people. Many artists and artisans work is displayed there, and true stories are told in the voice of the people. This space will educate and inform, with tens of thousands of visitors and school groups going through it each year.
The Metis cabin also features Lisa and Kristi's collaborative works. Their families, (the Campions, Chalifouxs, Donalds, L’Hirondelles, Norris, Gladues and Dumonts) were there on the land along with so many other Métis families at the very beginning of the formation of the province.

New 2021 Saanich, BC, Saanich Parks Field Guide
Saanich Parks released a beautiful new field guide to inspire a passion for nature discoveries in parks close to home. This illustrated field guide highlights some of the plants and animals found in Saanich parks and the different types of ecosystems where they live. It is a visual learning tool aimed at youth, but the intent is to encourage learning and enjoyment for all park visitors.
“We hope our new guide will enhance the experience of our park visitors and encourage them to be curious about their natural surroundings,” said Manager Community Development and Business Systems Nathalie Dechaine. “The guide is part of our Natural Intelligence initiative that aims to improve citizens’ knowledge about our natural world and how we connect with it. In deepening that connection with nature, we tend to be happier, healthier and motivated to protect it. ”
The field guide was developed to have the look and feel of an artist’s nature notes highlighting some of the plants and animals that live in our local ecosystems. Illustrated to capture the spirit and beauty of the unique nature that exists around us. Saanich Parks will develop resources for families and educators to use with the field guide so they can broaden their learning while experiencing these lovely places. Saanich parks provide vital habitat for plants and animals. Please help us protect these special places by treading carefully, taking only memories and leaving nothing but footprints.
