by Kristi Bridgeman and Lisa Shepherd
Based on the story of Atchakos Iskwew (Star Woman) who descended on a fine web from the centre of the Pleiades, reminding us of our beginnings as star dust.
During the fur trade when animal fur was abundant a gift of a hide blanket was considered an honour. As hides became scarce a new tradition evolved: creating and gifting a star blanket. Pioneer women created these treasures of small fabric scraps for life events such as marriage. The exacting nature of the precise cutting, measuring, and hours of sewing show the recipient great honour. On this star blanket, the strawberries acknowledge our grandmothers, great grandmothers and our connection throughout all of time. The strawberries (heart berries) are considered women medicine. The heart shape, the ability to nourish and nurture, and the runners and seeds that bear life, all acknowledge the historic roles of women. To read about this artist collaboration, see this web page.
