"Water and Sustenance"
by Kristi Bridgeman and Lisa Shepherd
“Water and sustenance” shows the whitefish in many life stages. In the eastern doorway the whitefish begins life as fertilized eggs laid amongst the pebbles of shallow water. The fertile eggs develop into alevins carrying their food source below them on their belly. Alevins develop into fry that move into deeper waters. As fry develop into adults they feed near the bottom of lakes and streams, spawning, and moving on to the northern doorway. As the whitefish cycle completes, the fish become nutrients that sustain the shrimp, crustaceans and all the ecology connected food webs, hence becoming part of the whole intricately balanced food chain.
The whitefish give their life to us in order to sustain our lives by providing nourishment as a food source. We show our respect and gratitude by making use of their iridescent scales, bones and vertebrae in our traditional fish scale art. To read about this artist collaboration, see this web page.
