"Western Painted Turtle, Native Pond Lily"

It is understandable why the gorgeous red and black markings of the Western painted turtle inspired the artist. Kristi was motivated to paint the subject when she discovered that the Vancouver Island habitat for these turtles is in decline. Here, the female has successfully laid a large clutch of eggs and the babies return to the pond for a feast of pond lily.
